Rutgers Begins 250th Anniversary Year Commemoration
Rutgers 250, a yearlong celebration of Rutgers’ 250th Anniversary, has officially commenced. The university community and friends gathered for kickoff events held across all Rutgers' locations.
Rutgers 250 Kickoff Celebration in New Brunswick
On November 10, 2015, despite rainy weather, hundreds enjoyed the colonial-theme festivities on the lawn at Old Queens in New Brunswick. Attendees met figures from Rutgers' past, played historical trivia, and snacked on chili and cupcakes. The sound of the fife-and-drum corps, bell choir, musicians from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, and Rutgers Marching Band were heard throughout the event. Highlights of the celebration included premiere screenings of the short film Our Revolutionary Spirit; the unveiling of the Revolutionary monument and the announcement of the Donate a Photo scholarship program, gifts from long-time neighbor Johnson & Johnson; the signing of a commemorative scroll; and a community bell ringing that marked the official start of the anniversary year. Rutgers University–Camden Opens Writers House for Anniversary
Kicking off the 250th anniversary year on November 10, 2015, the Camden community enjoyed birthday cake in the campus center. Also that week, key city landmarks including The Gateway mural installation, Camden City Hall, and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge were lit up in scarlet. On November 17, 2015, President Barchi and Chancellor Phoebe Haddon hosted the opening of the Writers House at 305 Cooper Street. The transformed Queen Anne Revival mansion is a place for readings, workshops, and the home for the Department of English and Master of Fine Arts Program. Read more
Ribbon-Cutting Celebration at Rutgers University–Newark
President Robert Barchi joined Chancellor Nancy Cantor on November 17, 2015, to cut the ribbon for 15 Washington Street, which was refurbished and redesigned for student living, as part of Rutgers University–Newark's anniversary kickoff. The event also celebrated Rutgers 250, Newark’s 350th anniversary, and the retirement of M. William Howard, Bethany Baptist Church pastor and former Board of Governors chair.
