Today, most drugs are developed to treat the manifestations of disease, e.g. lowering blood glucose, shrinking tumors, decreasing inflammation, but with few exceptions (vaccines, antibiotics, antivirals), prevention of disease or interception of a disease-causing process is neglected. The 2016 Aaron J. Shatkin Lecture, "Immorbidity: Leading a Life Free of Disease," presented by William Hait will attempt to explore the reasons for this approach and how together, we might create a world without disease.

As founding director of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), William N. Hait established and developed the clinical and research activities of the center that led to its status as the first and only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey. During construction of the CINJ building in the mid-1990s, Dr. Hait resided at the newly opened community on the Busch/Piscataway campus.

As Rutgers celebrates its 250th Anniversary, the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) and CINJ mark their 30th and 25th Anniversaries, respectively. The fifth annual Aaron J. Shatkin Lecture, established to honor CABM’s founding director, will celebrate two exception leaders who created centers and fostered cultures that greatly enrich the biomedical research enterprise at Rutgers.
