Across the university, the Rutgers community and friends gathered to celebrate Rutgers’ 250th Birthday on November 10, 2016. Our yearlong commemoration that featured hundreds of events culminated in grand fashion. Dozens of our most accomplished graduates returned to campus to speak with our communities on A Day of Revolutionary Thinking. In Camden, Newark, New Brunswick, and Piscataway all joined in to wish the university well and watched spectacular fireworks displays.

The Night Sky Illuminated
On November 10, the Empire State Building in New York City, the Old Queens Building on Rutgers' historic campus in New Brunswick, and other local landmarks were illuminated, some in scarlet, to mark the 250th Birthday. Spectacular fireworks displays awed gatherers in Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick.
The Ceremony at Old Queens
At Old Queens, Rutgers' original campus, the Old Queens bell—and other bells in New Brunswick and Piscataway tolled for 250 seconds to mark the milestone birthday. Rutgers ROTC members ceremoniously raised a commemorative American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol and was given to Rutgers by Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen. In addition, a Rutgers 250 All-Star Variety Scarlet Dogwood tree was planted on the Old Queens lawn.
A Day of Revolutionary Thinking
The university welcomed esteemed alumni from dozens of fields—designated as our Rutgers 250 Fellows—for A Day of Revolutionary Thinking on November 10, 2016. These extraordinary individuals from diverse fields shared with guests, faculty, staff, and students exciting ideas, discoveries, and practices that are shaping our world.
Rutgers University–Camden Marks the Occasion
Chancellor Phoebe Haddon hosted the Annual Charter Day festivities with cake, giveaways, and more to mark Rutgers' 250th Birthday in Camden. In addition, many attended presentations by our distinguished alumni during A Day of Revolutionary Thinking.

Students enjoyed a 250th Birthday celebration with music, snacks, games, and giveaways, hosted by the Chancellors Office at Rutgers University–Newark.

Students enjoyed music, food, inflatables, giveaways, and fireworks during the Rutgers 250 Birthday Celebration at Deiner Park. Many wished Rutgers a happy birthday while grabbing a cupcake throughout the day at dining halls and student centers.
