Across the university, the Rutgers community and friends gathered to celebrate Rutgers’ 250th Birthday on November 10, 2016. Our yearlong commemoration that featured hundreds of events culminated in grand fashion. The Night Sky Illuminated

On November 10, the Empire State Building in New York City, the Old Queens Building on Rutgers' historic campus in New Brunswick, and other local landmarks were illuminated, some in scarlet, to mark the 250th Birthday. Spectacular fireworks displays awed gatherers in Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick.

The Ceremony at Old Queens

At Old Queens, Rutgers' original campus, the Old Queens bell—and other bells in New Brunswick and Piscataway tolled for 250 seconds to mark the milestone birthday. Rutgers ROTC members ceremoniously raised a commemorative American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol and was given to Rutgers by Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen. In addition, a Rutgers 250 All-Star Variety Scarlet Dogwood tree was planted on the Old Queens lawn.
