A New Rutgers: Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences
Most units of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey moved into Rutgers in July 2013, making Rutgers one of the largest comprehensive research universities in the country. Since then, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) has been fully integrated into the University, administratively and academically.
In building the strength of RBHS, Chancellor Brian Strom recruited eminent leaders in such fields as cancer research (Steven Libutti), translational science (Reynold Panettieri), global health (Richard Marlink), and behavioral health care (Frank Ghinassi). In recruiting Martin Blaser, Maria Gloria Dominguez Bello, and Liping Zhao, Rutgers now has three of the nation’s top microbiome researchers.
Evidence of its growing excellence:
- RBHS leads a consortium of New Jersey universities that have secured the Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health—a highly competitive award that provides $29 million over five years for the Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science.
- Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey was redesignated by the National Cancer Institute as the state’s only comprehensive cancer center—one of only 49 so designated in the nation—and received a $15 million grant.
