About the University Strategic Plan
In 2013, months after President Robert Barchi took office, Rutgers embarked on a yearlong strategic planning process. Tens of thousands across the University and the broader community contributed their ideas through surveys, town halls, focus groups, faculty forums, departmental meetings, University Senate discussions, and retreats. What emerged in 2014 was a plan written for Rutgers, by Rutgers.
The University Strategic Plan comprised four overarching strategic priorities—build faculty excellence, transform the student experience, enhance our public prominence, and envision tomorrow’s university—and a set of foundational elements undergirding those priorities. All these goals fed the plan’s aspiration for Rutgers to be broadly recognized as among the nation’s leading public universities.
The strategic plan has guided a new Rutgers undergoing seismic changes, chief among them the integration of most units of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers; entrance into the Big Ten, the nation’s premier athletic and academic conference; and the infusion of hundreds of millions of dollars in state bond funding for capital construction across the University.
