Committee on Academic Unit Organization

The Committee on Academic Unit Organization, as outlined in the University Strategic Plan, was established in 2014 and charged with examining how best to organize Rutgers’ academic units as the university responds to the evolving educational demands of research-intensive, education-focused residential and urban-based universities. Members of the committee were asked to review the current organization of Rutgers’ academic units and recommend potential realignments that would allow faculty to collaborate more effectively in their teaching and research efforts. The committee was also asked to consider the best structures for units that span multiple campuses and recommend potential new schools or academic units that would move Rutgers forward and align the institution, where appropriate to our mission, more closely with other great public universities.

After producing an interim report in 2016, the committee issued a final report in April 2017 that proposed new cross-campus academic entities, new methods of collaboration across units and campuses, changes in undergraduate education, a broadening and coordination of Rutgers’ outreach, and other recommendations.  In October 2017, Dr. Barchi offered his response to each of the report’s major recommendations.
