Accomplishments

In his role as Rutgers’ chief executive officer, President Barchi was tasked with setting universitywide strategy in consultation with the governing boards, his leadership team, and the broader university community. He provided strategic direction for taking full advantage of the 2013 integration of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers and the university’s 2014 entrance into the Big Ten Conference. Developing and then building on a strategic plan and a companion physical master plan, he led Rutgers through a remarkable period of growth and excellence that included:

  • A doubling of externally funded endowed professorships
  • Major investments in faculty diversity and in the humanities
  • New honors college, tuition assistance programs, and student-friendly online services
  • An overhaul and modernization of Rutgers' financial and administrative systems
  • Record-breaking fundraising
  • A surge in construction, with state-of-the-art academic buildings transforming campuses across Rutgers
  • A memorable celebration of the University's 250th anniversary culminating in a visit by then-President Barack Obama
