About the 250 Issue

To honor the 250th Anniversary of the founding of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in 1766, Rutgers Magazine has compiled this special 80-page commemorative issue, which traces the early decades of Rutgers, when it was known as Queen’s College, a seminary for the Dutch Reformed Church, to its preeminence today as one of the nation’s top public research universities. The issue also celebrates the students, alumni, and faculty who have lent Rutgers its unique character.

Rutgers Magazine—which highlights the research, teaching, and service missions of Rutgers as well as the achievements of its alumni—is published three times a year, in February, June, and October, by the Department of University Communications and Marketing and the Rutgers University Alumni Association at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. It is distributed to nearly 450,000 alumni and friends as well as Rutgers faculty and staff, legislators, local government officials, and high school counselors around the state. The magazine, founded in 1914 as Rutgers Alumni Quarterly, became Rutgers Monthly in 1921 and Rutgers Alumni Magazine in 1969.
