Thanking Phoebe Haddon for Her Leadership as Chancellor

Earlier today Rutgers University–Camden Chancellor Phoebe Haddon announced that this will be her final semester as chancellor and that she will be returning to the faculty as of July 1, 2020.
It has been my great pleasure to serve alongside Chancellor Haddon since the day she joined the Rutgers–Camden community six years ago and to witness the inspiring leadership she has provided at a pivotal time. A person of integrity and honor, intelligence and compassion, Phoebe has been an ideal leader for students, faculty, and staff as Rutgers–Camden has further developed a strong identity and forged ever-deeper bonds with the people of its host city, southern New Jersey, and the Delaware Valley. Indeed, her commitment to the redevelopment of Camden has contributed significantly to its transformation.
During her time, Rutgers University–Camden has advanced in national recognition for the strength of its research and the depth of its commitment to community. In 2018, Rutgers–Camden was classified for the first time as a Doctoral University: High Research Activity institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Three years earlier, Rutgers–Camden earned classification as a Community Engaged Institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. These designations are extremely important and impressive achievements and a credit to Chancellor Haddon’s leadership.
Among her many achievements, Chancellor Haddon is responsible for the effectiveness and impact of the Bridging the Gap financial assistance program, which makes a Rutgers education possible for increasing numbers of students, including many who are the first in their family to attend college. That program has helped Rutgers–Camden grow both in enrollment and diversity.
In addition to her administrative and academic achievements at Rutgers–Camden, Chancellor Haddon has been a role model for all of us in the Rutgers community. During her time here, she has received the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of American Law Schools, a Smith College medal recognizing exemplary alumnae of that institution, and the Trailblazer’s Award from the New Jersey Women Lawyers’ Association, among many other honors. Most recently, she was named to a two-year term as chair of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
Championing excellence, access, and engagement, Phoebe Haddon has moved Rutgers University–Camden forward in vital ways, and we are a better and stronger institution because of her. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Chancellor Haddon for an outstanding tenure and offering our warmest wishes as she moves to the faculty this summer.
