Chancellor Appointment for Rutgers University–New Brunswick

June 2, 2014

Dear Members of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Community,

Over the past year—and in alignment with our new University Strategic Plan—we have conducted national searches for senior University academic leaders, and we are fortunate to have recruited Nancy Cantor as Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark, Phoebe Haddon as Chancellor of Rutgers University–Camden, and Brian Strom as Chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Today, I am pleased to announce that I am confirming Richard L. Edwards as Chancellor of Rutgers University–New Brunswick, and removing the interim designation from his title.

Dick Edwards has enjoyed a distinguished career as a professor and an administrator, including serving as dean at Case Western Reserve University and as both dean and interim provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At Rutgers, Dick served as Dean of the School of Social Work before being appointed Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and he served as interim President of Rutgers University prior to my arrival. Dick will continue in his role as EVPAA, where he oversees the coordination of university-wide academic programs and the tenure review and academic promotion process across the University.

We are fortunate to rely on Dick’s steadfast leadership during this exciting period in our University’s history. He has been helping to oversee the implementation of the 100-Day Initiatives from the University Strategic Plan, which are vital to the plan’s overall success, and he has been leading the strategic planning process on the Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus. With new academic leadership on the New Brunswick campus—including the new executive dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and the dean of the Graduate School of Education—and the outstanding administrators already in place, Dick has the support of a dynamic team to lead this great institution.

With this nationally recognized senior leadership team now in place, I look forward to implementing the bold vision outlined in the strategic plan, ensuring we realize our shared aspiration to be recognized among the nation’s leading public research universities.

Please join me in congratulating Dick.

Sincerely,

Bob Barchi
