The Rutgers Medical School was originally part of Rutgers University. The Medical and Dental Act of 1970 merged Rutgers Medical School with the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry, placing both under the newly formed College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, which would become the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Rutgers Medical School would be renamed the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1986.
