In 1961 John Bateman coached the football team to its first undefeated season in history. In the last game of the season, a home game, Rutgers beat Columbia, 32–19, with a 25-point fourth-quarter comeback. Other opponents that year were Princeton, Connecticut, Bucknell, Lehigh, University of Pennsylvania, Lafayette, Delaware, and Colgate.
