A multimillion dollar industry was saved when professor Harold Haskin, above, bred a strain of oysters resistant to a parasite that nearly wiped out oyster beds from Maine to Florida in the 1950s. Rutgers currently ranks third among the top 10 most productive oyster research institutions in the world.
