How Sweet It Is

For 25 years, alumni Michael and Jennifer Schnur have made Thomas Sweet Ice Cream & Chocolate in New Brunswick a place to bring smiles.

Theirs was a marriage made in sugar, milk, and thick cream. With sprinkles. Michael RC’87 and Jennifer UCNB’87 Schnur bought Thomas Sweet Ice Cream & Chocolate on Easton Avenue in New Brunswick in 1988 after graduating with degrees in economics (his) and communication (hers). Today, their business—featuring 150 flavors of ice cream, all made on location (as are the chocolate and fudge, available in their Next Door gift shop)—is a favorite culinary way station for Rutgers students. Despite the demands of their job, Thomas Sweet remains an ongoing source of pleasure for the couple, who have two grown children and employ 25 young people, some of them the children of their former Rutgers classmates. “Someone said we were in the business of comfort and celebration,” says Jennifer. “It’s a job we do get pleasure out of because when people come in, if they’re not happy already, we’ll make them happy.”                      — Christopher Hann
