In Memoriam

John Stiegman, Retired Staff, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on October 31, 2006. Former Head Football Coach Stiegman was a member of the Athletics Department.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 17 at 12:30 pm at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, 2688 Main St., Lawrenceville, NJ.

Former Rutgers University head football coach John Stiegman was an assistant at Princeton before coming to Rutgers in 1956. He also served as head coach at Pennsylvania and Iowa Wesleyan, and was an assistant coach at Pittsburgh and Army.

Stiegman came to Rutgers in 1956 at the age of 33, the youngest major college coach in the country at that time. His 1958 Rutgers team, led by first team All America halfback Bill Austin, finished with an 8-1 record. Stiegman coached the Scarlet Knights for four seasons (1956-59), and compiled a 22-15 record. After guiding to Rutgers to a 6-3 record in 1959, Stiegman was named head coach at the University of Pennsylvania.

Stiegman died of cancer on October 31. He was 83.
