Barbara L. Tangel

Barbara Tangel, assistant teaching professor of nutritional sciences and director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, died on January 21, 2018. She was 67. Funeral services were held on January 26 in East Brunswick, followed by interment at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.

An East Brunswick resident for most of her life, Tangel served the Department of Nutritional Sciences, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, at Rutgers University for 43 years. Tangel's greatest contribution and impact upon the department and the university began in May 2000 when she became the director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). Under her leadership, the program received a commendation from the Accreditation Council for the Education of Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) for its continued pass rate of greater than 90 percent on the National Registration Examination for Dietitians, a required measure of program success. In the past two years, the pass rate for first-time Rutgers test takers has been 100 percent.

Tangel was a faculty member at Douglass, Cook, and University colleges; the College of Nursing in Newark; and the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Tangel served as an academic advisor, associate director of the Healthy Dining Team and, since 2008, as a nutritional sciences advisor to incoming freshmen. She also served as a nutrition consultant to the Visiting Nurse Association in Middlesex County and the Woodbridge Health Department.

In 2016, she received the New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Distinguished Member Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon an outstanding role model with a lasting impact on the profession. She was a 45-year member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its New Jersey affiliate. She was also the recipient of Rutgers University Faculty Service Award six times.

In addition to her academic contributions, she was leader of the Frisky Paws 4-H Club for over 12 years, and was honored with the 4-H Leader of the Year Award. She was also a communicant of St. Mary of Ostrabrama RC Church in South River.

Predeceased by her parents, Bruno and Clara Kulbacki Lapinski, Tangel is survived by her daughter, Kristin Tangel of East Brunswick, several cousins, her 4-H family, and many devoted and loving friends.
