Audrey Burkart

Audrey Burkart, former chair of the Department of Family and Community Health Sciences and 4-H Youth Development at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, died on October 9, 2017, in her Ridgefield, N.J. home. Services were held at Zion Lutheran Church, Ridgefield, on October 13.

Burkart earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University and a doctorate from Columbia University in the field of nutrition and home economics. She taught at Ridgefield High School and Rutgers University, where she became the head of the Nutrition and Home Economics Department, now known as the Department of Family and Community Health Sciences. An active member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Burkart received its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.

She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Anna, and her brother, Robert. Burkart is survived by her first cousins, Marilyn Burkart, Joan Burkart Weise, and Marion Beisler and cousins Martha and Richard Richter III, Richard and Amanda Richter IV, Susan Richter, Debbie Weise Kenyon and her spouse, Michael Kenyon, Maryann Weise Mandy and her spouse, Donald Mandy, Daniel Burkart Jr., and Tracy Ann Burkart.
