Stuart R. Race

Stuart R. Race, professor emeritus and extension specialist, Department of Entomology, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, passed away peacefully on May 31 at Bridgeway Care Center in Bridgewater, N.J. surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old.

A viewing will be held on June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Layton Funeral Home, Bedminster, N.J. Funeral services will be on June 8 at 1 p.m. at Pluckemin Presbyterian Church, Pluckemin, N.J.

A resident of Bridgewater, N.J., and a 1944 graduate of Newton High School, Race attended Bloomfield College before transferring to Gettysburg College, from which he graduated in 1951. He received his M.S. in 1955 and his doctorate in entomology in 1957 from Rutgers University–New Brunswick.

Race researched and taught at New Mexico State University, Las Cruzes, N.M., from 1957 to 1965. He was an extension specialist in entomology at Cook College, Rutgers University–New Brunswick, from 1965 until his retirement in 1993. He published many research studies and was well known among the N.J. farm community, which he advised on insect control issues involving vegetable and field crops, tree fruits, poultry, and livestock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, or the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church.
