James L. Sanderson

James L. Sanderson, 89, of Center City, Philadelphia, retired professor of English literature at Rutgers University–Camden, passed away on June 10, 2015. Services were private.

Sanderson began his Rutgers–Camden career in 1960, heading the Department of English in the 1970s. He focused on the works of Shakespeare. He retired in 1993.

He was said to be especially proud of the first of four books he edited, the 1962 Norton Critical Edition of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I.

A former Haddonfield resident, Sanderson earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Michigan and a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and as an operations officer on the destroyer Charles D. Ware from 1952 to 1953.

He is survived by two sons, Scott and Stuart.
