Kyle Kirst

Kyle Kirst, a goaltender on the 1990 Rutgers lacrosse team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, passed away on June 16, 2015, following an apparent heart attack. He was 47.

A funeral Mass was offered on June 19 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Bernardsville, New Jersey.

Kirst was a three-year letter winner and a popular member of the Rutgers lacrosse team that compiled a 27-15 record from 1988 through 1990, when he graduated. Currently, he was a history teacher at Hanover Park High School, where he was assistant girls basketball coach. He also was assistant boys lacrosse coach at Summit High School.

He was described by friends and colleagues as someone with ďa passionate and caring approach to life.Ē

Kirst is survived by his wife, Michelle, and five sons, Connor, Colin, Cole, C.J., and Caden.

The news of Kirstís passing has produced an outpouring of support from the Rutgers community and alumni. A memorial fundraising campaign for his family has been established on at In its first day, the campaign generated more than $150,000.
