James Smith

James Smith, an emergency management specialist in the Rutgers Office of Emergency Management, passed away February 7, 2015.

Jim was a legacy UMDNJ employee in emergency management since 2006 and continued in that capacity after the integration with Rutgers University.

He started his career in 1980 as a firefighter for the Cranford Fire Department and worked as a paramedic at many area hospitals, including in Union, Rahway, and Somerset.

Jim represented Rutgers in many professional groups/associations, serving as vice president for the International Association of Emergency Managers and as sergeant-at-arms in the New Jersey Emergency Management Association.

He also worked as a FEMA instructor and was active in higher education emergency preparedness and emergency management.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and seven children, Katie, Emily, Matthew, Melinda, Jacob, Justine, and Andrew.

Jim dedicated his life to helping others. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with the Smith family during this most difficult time.

Donations for his family are being accepted here.
