In Memoriam

Michael Aissen, died on 01/07/2013

Michael Aissen died in Santa Cruz on Jan. 7, 2013, a few days short of his 92nd birthday.

He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Jewish parents in transit from the Ukraine to the United States. Mike attended school in NYC and Newark. He served in the Army (Medic Corps) during WWII and often said that he was doubly fortunate: first because he was not shot and second because he never had to shoot anyone. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1951 and taught at a number of universities, including Fordham University and Rutgers–Newark. After retiring and moving to the Monterey Bay area, he taught at the Naval Postgraduate School.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mildred Davis. In the years since he was widowed, he found friendship and community at Dominican Oaks.

He is survived by his children, Judith Aissen, Louis Aissen, and Claire Deem, by five grandchildren, and by a great-grandson.
