In Memoriam

Mariagnes Lattimer, Professor Emeritus, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on 01/04/2011. Professor Lattimer was a member of the Graduate School of Education and the School of Social Work.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon in the Kirkpatrick Chapel at Rutgers University.

Dr. Lattimer was named Professor Emeritus after her 1986 retirement at Rutgers University, where she served as Assistant Dean in the Graduate School of Education and Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work. She served tirelessly on the boards of the Rutgers School of Social Work Alumni Association, the former Rutgers University Alumni Federation and was an Alumni Representative to the University Senate from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 until 2001.
She received her Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education history and language arts in 1966 from Monmouth College at the age of 42. She earned her doctorate in philosophy in 1974 from Union Graduate School (Ohio). Dr. Lattimer earned her MSW from the Rutgers School of Social Work in 1981 and began her private practice in 1983. She also completed a Fulbright Scholarship in Germany.
Dr. Lattimer made numerous contributions to her profession and communities. She served on then-Governor James Florio’s Commission on Heath Care Financing in 1990; chaired the New Jersey State Health Planning Board from 1991 to 1995; developed the first Black Studies Program at Passaic Community College and taught courses; and she mentored many students at Rutgers University.
She received many awards including being named Woman of the Year by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women in 1968; New Jersey State Educator of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Black Educators in 1980; the Rutgers School of Social Work’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991; the Rutgers University Scarlet Oak Meritorious Service Award in 1994; and the Alumni Meritorious Service Award, sponsored by the Rutgers University Alumni Federation.
Dr. Lattimer was chairwoman of the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners from 1999 to 2001, and holds the first state (NJ) certificate for licensed social workers. She was a devoted member of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and was also honored with their Trailblazer Award in 2000 for her distinguished career in the field of social work.

The family is requesting that donations be made to the Medical Center at Princeton- Hospice Department or Catholic Charities of Mercer County, instead of flowers.
